About Special Olympics: |
The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for persons eight years of age and older with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.
The vision of Special Olympics Maryland is to help bring Special Olympics athletes into the larger society under conditions whereby they are accepted, respected and given the chance to become useful and productive citizens. |
About the Annapolis Jaycees |
Founded in 1949, the mission of the Annapolis Jaycees is to promote leadership and individual development through community service for individuals aged 21-40.

Volunteer Activities: |
Include working a stopwatch to time events, using a measuring tape to score long-jump events, scoring events, working at the registration and scores tables, directing escorts and their athletes to the proper events, and cheering on the athletes!

Parking: |
Parking on the USNA grounds is very limited. Only vehicles with Department of Defense access can enter the grounds, with the exception of a limited number of handicap parking spots (with appropriate passes). Therefore, we STONGLY recommend that volunteers either get a ride to either Gate 1 of the USNA or carpool. For those driving to the event, there are two public parking garages in downtown Annapolis (Gotts Garage and Hillman Garage). Additionally, public parking with a downtown shuttle is available at the US Naval and Marine Corp. Memorial Stadium in Annapolis. For more information, please see the following links

Gate 1 (the public entrance) of the US Naval Academy is located at the intersection of King George St. and Randall St, Annapolis, MD 21401. For more information, please see either the links above or below.

Proper Attire: |
The Swimming Competition (Saturday) is held in an indoor swimming venue (LeJeune Hall). Volunteers should be sure to wear athletic shoes appropriate for potentially slippery conditions.
The Track & Field Competition (Sunday) is held outside at Ingram Field. Volunteers should be mindful of the weather and dress accordingly. For warm weather, volunteers should bring sunscreen and hats. For cool weather, volunteers should wear long pants and long-sleeved shirts.
In the event of inclement weather on Sunday (during the Track & Field Competition), the games will be moved to Halsey Field House on the USNA grounds. |
Food: |
Breakfast snacks (bagels and donuts, juice and coffee) and lunch (pizza and/or burgers) will be provided for volunteers. |
Legal: |
All volunteers will be required to review and sign legal liability waivers prior to participating in the event. |
Community Service: |
Members of the Annapolis Jaycees will be available to provide documentation of hours worked for community service. PLEASE BE SURE TO SIGN-IN AND SIGN OUT WITH A MEMBBER OF THE JAYCEES IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO RECEIVE COMMUNITY SERVICE. Volunteers will be able take their community service sheet home with them when they leave. |
